What Happens to Your Body When You Drink a Can of Coke?

It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium, and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolytes, and water. As the rave inside you dies down, you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like hydrating your system, or building strong bones and teeth. This will all be followed by a caffeine crash in the next few hours. (As little as two if you’re a smoker.)

Bread, pasta and pizza - Caution

Today the main part of the calories consumed by men comes from cereal grains like wheat, oats, barley, rye, maize and rice. But we are not used to this new food we started to consume between only 10,000 and 5,000 years ago. Genetically we are still the hunter-gatherers from 190,000 years ago, adapted to meats, fruits and vegetables.

Anthropology tells us that as soon as we started eating grains, there was a reduction in stature and lifespan and an increase in infant mortality, infectious diseases, iron deficiency, bone mineral disorders and dental caries. And this was only the omen of all the trouble cereal grains would bring more to mankind.

   Cereal grains and carbohydrates

The endosperms of cereal grains are carbohydrate rich. When you consume a lot of grain based products you inevitable take up a lot of starch. We convert starch into blood sugar. It is known that a chronic intake of abundances of starch and sugar leads to high blood sugar, high insulin, overweight, insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and other diseases of civilization.

   Vitamins and minerals

Cereal grains contain no vitamins A, C, D and B12 and the bio-availability of the vitamins cereal grains do contain, is low. Some cereal grains even depress vitamin metabolism. Cereal grains are poor sources of calcium, but contain relatively high phosphorus. This negatively influences bone growth, bone loss and metabolism. On top of this, high magnesium levels cause calcium excretion. Due to phytates in grains, the bio-availability of calcium, iron, copper, magnesium and zinc is low. Iron deficiency causes anemia, increases infection and prenatal mortality and reduces the mental growth in children. Shortage of zinc can result in blocked growth, reduced activity of ovaries and testes and delayed start of puberty.

   Fats and protein

A diet based upon cereal grains, leads to a disturbance of the balance between omega 3 and 6. The omega 3 content is low and the omega 6 content is relatively high. Since omega 3 and 6 need to use the same metabolic pathways, there is competition between the two. A high dietary level of omega 6 inhibits the action of omega 3. This plays a role in thrombosis, coronary heart disease, preterm births, inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Human proteins are composed out of 21 amino acids. Nine of these are essential, this means that they must come from our diet. There must be a sufficient dietary intake of both essential and non-essential amino acids to prevent us from getting sick. Cereal grains are poor sources of several essential amino acids. Deficiencies can result in impaired growth, losses of lean body mass and muscular strength, weakened immune function and compromised recover capacity.


Cereal grains are rich in antinutrients like phytates, alkylresorcinols, alpha-amylase inhibitors, protease inhibitors, lectins and gluten. Antinutrients are compounds that interfere with the absorption of nutrients. Cereal grains contain all these antinutrients to protect themselves against predators like us. Alkylresorcinols have growth depressive effects. Also they cause red blood cells to break open, DNA strands to split, they stimulate platelet aggregation and are involved in liver and renal degeneration. Alpha-amylase inhibitors inactivate the breakdown of starch into sugars and cause hypersensitivity reactions. Chronic use induces harmful changes to the pancreas. Protease inhibitors oppose the activity of digestive enzymes and can cause enlargement of the pancreas which may lead to cancer.

   Lectins are the major antinutrients in cereal grains

Lectins consist of an extensive group of proteins that have the property to eagerly bind to carbohydrate containing molecules. Different cereal grains contain several different lectins. Lectins are closely related and cause similar adverse reactions. Almost every cell in the body and every extracellular element can be bound by lectins. Lectins are heat stable and resistant to digestive breakdown. Lectins bind, damage and change gut lining cells. This interferes with digestion and absorption and changes the bacterial flora, immune state and permeability of the gut. The increased permeability of the intestines facilitates the passage of lectins and not or partly degraded dietary proteins into the blood and lymphatic circulation. When you consume grains, the concentrations of these unwanted trespassers are high and they will interfere with your state of health. Wheat lectins for instance induce pancreatic enlargement, wasting away of the thymus, depression of insulin secretion and inhibition of cell division.

   Gluten, gliadin, lectins and WGA

Many people mix up gluten, gliadin, lectins and WGA (wheat germ agglutinin). Well, gluten is derived from the Latin word for glue. And sticky it is. It is the composite of the plant storage proteins prolamin and a glutelin. In wheat the prolamin is gliadin and the glutelin is glutenin. In other cereal grains you’ll find other prolamins and glutelins. So the variety of gluten and its components as found in various cereal grains is diverse. In popular language gluten is chiefly used for the gliadin in wheat. From gliadin there are again several types. So the gluten story is not that simple. Lectins are reviewed above and not only found in cereal grains, but also in legumes, nightshades and dairy. WGA is one of the many lectins and is found in wheat. WGA is known due to its dishonorable reputation to be the main cause of celiac disease. For now, in grosso modo, you can say that gluten and lectins both cause the same sort of havoc.

Arsenic in our food and drink

What the manufacturers put in the fruit juice? Can we trust the food that we are not produced?

The apple and grape juice your kids are drinking may have arsenic at levels high enough to increase their risk of cancer and other chronic diseases, according to a new study by Consumer Reports.

A full 10 percent of the juices tested by the magazine had arsenic levels higher than what is allowed in water by the Food and Drug Administration.

“What we’re talking about here is not about acute affects,” Urvashi Rangan, senior scientist at Consumer Reports, told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie. “We’re talking about chronic effects. We’re talking about cancer risk. And so, the fact that 10 percent of our samples exceeded the drinking water standard underscores the need for a standard to be set in juices.”

The fear is that over time arsenic will accumulate in children’s bodies and raise their risk of cancer and other serious illnesses, Rangan explained.

The new report echoes a study commissioned by Dr. Mehmet Oz back in September. When Oz reported his findings on his popular television show, the FDA responded by calling Oz’s study flawed and “extremely irresponsible.”
One of the issues the FDA had with Oz’s study was its failure to separate out measurements of inorganic and organic arsenic. Studies have linked inorganic arsenic to a variety of cancers. But many consider organic arsenics – especially the types commonly found in seafood - to be safe.

As far as Consumer Reports is concerned, that’s a head-in-the-sand approach.

“Questions have been raised about the human health effects of other types of organic arsenic in foods, including juices,” the magazine noted. “Use of organic arsenic in agricultural products has caused concern. For instance, the EPA in 2006 took steps to stop the use of herbicides containing organic arsenic because of their potential to turn into inorganic arsenic in the soil and contaminate drinking water.”

Beyond this, there’s evidence that organic arsenic converts into the inorganic form when chickens consume feeds that contain the compound, Consumer Reports researchers noted.

For its new study Consumer Reports tested 88 samples of apple and grape juices sold around the nation. Included among those tested were popular brand name juices like Minute Maid, Welch’s and Tropicana.

The study found five samples of apple juice and four of grape juice that had total arsenic levels exceeding the 10 parts per billion (ppb) federal limit for bottled and drinking water. “Most of the total arsenic in our samples was inorganic,” Consumer Reports noted.
The brand with the lowest arsenic level was Welch's Pourable Concentrate 100% Apple Juice (1.1-4.3 total arsenic ppb). Other juices with low arsenic levels include: America's Choice Apple; Tropicana 100% Apple; and Red Jacket Orchards 100% Apple.

Current FDA guidelines require water to have no more than 10 ppb of inorganic arsenic. The agency also has standards for juices and those allow higher levels of the compound – 23 ppb. The level is allowed to be higher because it’s assumed that people will consume more water than juice in the course of a normal day.

Rangan took exception to that line of thinking because the standard is based on how much water an average adult will drink in a day. “It’s not about a child who weighs far less,” she told Guthrie.

The new findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that juices may not be as safe as we think. Rangan pointed to an FDA study that found arsenic levels at 86 parts per billion in a baby apple juice.

A spokesperson for the Juice Products Association said she found the new report reassuring since it found no sample that tested higher than what is currently required by the FDA for juices.

“They showed that the juice samples they tested met the Food and Drug Administration’s limit on arsenic in juice,” toxicologist Gail Charnley told Guthrie. “The toxicologists and the food safety experts at the FDA set that limit in a precautionary public health based kind of way. And the food industry is committed to meeting those limits.”

The new report might prompt the FDA to change its standards for juices. In a written statement, the agency explained its response to the new data.

"We welcome the research that Consumer Reports has undertaken and look forward to reviewing the data that formed the basis for their story and their recommendations,” the agency noted. “We continue to find the vast majority of apple juice tested to contain low levels of arsenic, including the most recent samples from China. For this reason, FDA is confident in the overall safety of apple juice consumed in this country. By the same token, a small percentage of samples contain elevated levels of arsenic. In response, FDA has expanded our surveillance activities and is collecting additional data”

If that leads the FDA to change its standards for juices then the juice manufacturers will comply, Charnley said.

That was all good news to Oz. If we look at how the nation handled a similar problem two decades ago, it’s clear that we can make a difference for our kids, he said.

“Twenty-five years ago we had a problem with lead in America,” Oz told Guthrie. “And we have over the last generation been able to reduce by 90 percent the amount of lead that our kids are exposed to and that is found in their blood. As a doctor it makes me much more confident that we can do the same thing for arsenic.”

Statements made in response to TODAY report on arsenic levels in apple and grape juice

On Wednesday, November 30th, TODAY aired a report about Consumer Reports' new study on arsenic levels in apple and grape juice. Below are statements in response from the FDA and the Juice Products Association.

   Statement from the FDA

"We welcome the research that Consumer Reports has undertaken and look forward to reviewing the data that formed the basis for their story and their recommendations. The FDA is committed to protecting the nation's public health from contaminants in our food supply and has been monitoring fruit juices, including apple juice, for arsenic content for more than 20 years. We continue to find the vast majority of apple juice tested to contain low levels of arsenic, including the most recent samples from China. For this reason, FDA is confident in the overall safety of apple juice consumed in this country. By the same token, a small percentage of samples contain elevated levels of arsenic. In response, FDA has expanded our surveillance activities and is collecting additional data to help determine if a guidance level can be established that will reduce consumer's exposure to arsenic in apple juice. FDA will continue to monitor the latest science and work with EPA and USDA to protect public health."

   Statement from the Juice Products Association

"Safety and quality are the top priorities for U.S. juice producers. Consumers can be assured that juice producers test their products and comply with Federal regulations requiring that companies evaluate their processes, ingredients and packaging to ensure food safety.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), based upon thorough scientific evaluation and risk assessment, has established specific levels of concern for inorganic arsenic in apple and pear juice at 23 parts per billion (PPB) and for lead in fruit juice at 50 ppb. Juice products sold in the U.S. are within these Federal guidelines and we understand that the results of the Consumer Reports testing reinforce the findings that juice sold in America is safe and well below the levels of concern for arsenic and lead content.

Consumer Reports and other media outlets erroneously compare juice to the standards for drinking water. Juice is not water. To compare the trace levels of arsenic or lead in juice to the regulatory guidelines for drinking water is not appropriate because regulatory agencies have set lower thresholds for drinking water than for food and other beverages because people consume larger amounts of water. When FDA experts in food safety and toxicology developed the level of concern for juice, it took into account juice consumption among people of various ages, including children.

Juice producers rely on Federal regulatory agencies to establish science-based safety limits and juice producers will continue to comply with those."

   Food or Poison?

The greatest amounts of arsenic were found in the juice of apples and grapes.

One of the things that the FDA nabila on the nose Oz this study is that it is divided organic of inorganic arsenic. Already, many studies have linked inorganic arsenic with a lot of diseases. But many believe that organic arsenic, especially one that is found in seafood, safe to use.

Consumer Reports finds that it is usually running away from problems and thrusting his head in the sand.

In all this there is evidence that chickens who eat food that contains organic arsenic are converted into organic and inorganic poison so those who are fed with such meat, adds CR.

11.6.2011. FDA - Food and Drug Administration has finally admitted that the chicken meat to be sold in stores in the U.S. contain arsenic, a chemical that in large quantities causes cancer! And worse, in my own research, FDA states that arsenic is added to poultry feed and finishes in their meat, and as such it we consume.

In the study, FDA stated that the analysis of 100 chickens that ate Roxarsone found high levels of inorganic arsenic, as opposed to organic arsenic, which occurs naturally in the liver of chicks who do not eat Roxarsone. Inorganic arsenic is more toxic than organic.

The article writes that the FDA stated that the amount of added arsenic is actually small and that it is free to ignore, because in such small quantities is not toxic to humans.
Roxarsone (manufacturer PFIZER), food additive, which is actually arsenic,is added to poultry feed to kill parasites, but also as a means to greater growth. Many poultry firms have stopped using food for chickens that contains arsenic, but the FDA, however, maintains that people should stop using meat treated Roxarsonom!

Otherwise, Roxarsone has long been a concern of various environmental groups, due to its retention in chicken waste as well as concern for the health of people living in areas of major poultry. Until this study, all the poultry industry and the FDA itself did not confess to arsenic from food ends up in chicken meat. Beautiful argued that it is excreted in chicken feces.

Natural News in its  article about arsenic in chicken meat says: the subsidiary Pfizer - Alpharma withdraws its product, but only in the United States and from other countries do not, there remains for sale unless otherwise ordered by the authorities!

 So we come to the paradox - the U.S. is growing campaign against domestic raw milk or juices, indicating that these products are tendered drugs. So, it's OK to eat arsenic, but natural products do not ....

Less sugar - more babies

 In Sweden, one in four adults eats the LCHF principle. LCHF (low carb-high fats)
Most pregnant women does not end with this way of eating when they find out they were pregnant. The best thing a pregnant woman can do for yourself and your baby to eat natural and healthy food and to expel the industrial products. There are many examples that women were at "normal" diet during the first two pregnancies and the third went through the LCHF. In Sweden it is common to have three children, and as the popularity LCHF eating lately is growing so fast, of course, the more those who are following this diet, and stay on it during pregnancy.

Children are well developed, are born of normal weight mothers do not receive the mass excess weight during pregnancy, does not accumulate in the body of water, avoid gestational diabetes and those who had it earlier, keep sugar under control and do not need insulin injections.

  We are genetically predisposed to certain types of food. Let's call it how we want - if some people do not like the name LCHF if someone that sounds like another fad diet, we can use other names popular around the world as Paleo, Low Carb, Primal, Optimal - all these are the names of the same ways diet that is most similar to the diet of our ancestors. Or we can find a Croatian word, so this diet called the primordial human food ... Anyway, one of its foundation was a hunter / gatherers and ate the meat and fat of animals, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. There were no cereals, flour, sugar, biscuits, cakes, pastries, cereals, bread, pasta, sweets, coca cola, margarine, soy, GMO foods, glutamate, artificial colors and flavors and a variety of other chemicals in food and not continue to list the all the "modern" miracle food industry.  

Food Pyramid says we need 60% of their caloric needs met from carbohydrates (sugars and starches). Taking for example a minimum requirement of 2000 kcal per day, this means that we should take 1200 calories from carbohydrates, ie, 300 grams of carbohydrates a day. Carbohydrates are not essential substance, not construction material for the body, hormones, muscles, brain, such as proteins and fats - where did we get the building materials for our body if we take 1200 calories a day in the form of nutritionally empty carbohydrates?

There are no strict rules as a "bit" of carbohydrate is low carb. In any case much lower than this recommended intake, usually between 20-80 g. everything depends on the physical needs of each individual and sensitivity to the carbs. As I already said, many are very sensitive to carbohydrates, which means that secrete more insulin than some kind of average. That's why these people can easily gain weight because insulin prevents wear fat for energy and contributes to saving energy in the form of fat reserves on the body. These persons must be hard to lose weight and strict attention to the carb to get the results. Others who are not this sensitive could bring a greater amount of carbohydrates and will not gain weight so much as they are sensitive and will easily and lose weight.

Strict LCHF mean intake of about 20 - 30 g of carbs per day for persons who need to lose weight. These 20-30 grams entries mainly from vegetables and some nuts. For dairy products there is no much space, but the spoon of cream and a little grated cheese in food preparation, and the teaspoon of cream in coffee can pass. But even this 20-30 should not be understood literally, again it all depends from person to person, and its border with the carb you will lose weight you find yourself.

More relaxed LCHF is about 50 - 80 g carbs a day, for those who have achieved the desired weight, but who still can not relax until the end and eat carbs as they come to mind, because if they do pounds, to be repaid. This carb provides diverse selection of vegetables and less fruit, and more nuts and dairy products. But here is the need of control, and to find a "golden" middle carb with which you will not lose weight or to gain weight. Again it goes - listen to your body and watch how it reacts.

Besides these two, already discussed the concept, we have what we might call "casual" LCHF (I have a problem with definitions, give freely of their suggestions of better terms), that diets reduced carbohydrate to people who have normal body weight and you do not need to lose weight but just want a healthy diet. These people have no need to add up carbs and they can enter the liberated quantity - of course referring to the healthy carbs from fruits, vegetables, dairy products and nuts and seeds. Even the intake from 100 to 150 g carbs (according to Mark Sisson, author of book "Primal Blueprint") still is considered a reduced carb compared to what is recommended diet pyramid, where the staples are cereals, flour, pasta, sugar, potatoes, rice, etc., from which we should be consuming over 300 g of carbs per day.

How do I do the stories of pregnant women came to define LCHF diet. So I do not want to be misinterpreted that pregnant women should be on a "diet". I believe (my belief is not a substitute for medical advice) that pregnant women are free to be more relaxed and freer LCHF which means that in addition to meat, fish, eggs and natural fat free to eat a variety of vegetables and fruit in the desired quantities as well as nuts and dairy products (if they are filed - and can not tolerate all dairy). There is no reason to add or weighing food. These are natural, nutritious foods that contain plenty of nutrients required and the mother and baby. To be clear, it is known that many groups of people as for example, Eskimos have lived with 0 carbs because of snow and ice did not have where to find the plants they eat and yet they are born very healthy children. However there is no reason that we do it because we were all adapted to the climate from which, the climate and locally grown ingredients according to season. What nature provides us at certain times of the year in the area in which we live is the optimal food for us. So for example there is no need to eat watermelon and tomatoes all year round, we know when and where their season ... I do not have to eat 30 kinds of vegetables in order to get all the vitamins and minerals. Each season brings its fruits and those that are harvested mature have a much higher nutritional value than early harvested fruits and vegetables, which are transported across half the globe, or where a plastic tomatoes from the Netherlands who do not grow from the earth.

Eating a low-carb LCHF - Paleo - Primal - Low Carb - Optimal Healthy eating for all, including for pregnant women. Cereals, bread and pastry, nutritionally poor foods and do not lose anything when we drop them from your diet. On the contrary, when we eat fewer empty calories from grains, it brings a more nutritionally rich foods that are the building materials for our body, thus ensuring better health and stronger immunity. In addition to foods and their quality plays a very important role: healthier meat, milk and eggs from organic animal farming, breeding, or wildlife, but the meat of animals from large-scale farming where the animals feed concentrates and soy, and where they are treated with growth hormones and antibiotics. Healthier fish of the sea which floats freely and eat their natural food than fish from farms which are moreover grains and swim in their own feces. Cured meat products are not unhealthy and carcinogenic because they are made of meat, but because the industry is in them, she added carcinogenic preservatives and flavor enhancers to make them more able to dilute and extend their shelf life.

Dr Stigsby reports that one in seven women who visit his clinic has such a high level of insulin that is the direct cause of their infertility. This is why women get instructions to dramatically reduce intake of sugar, flour, potatoes, and instead eat more protein and fat in meat, poultry, fish, eggs, vegetables and nuts. After changing the diet of these women often get a normal menstruation and ovulation, which allows natural conception, says Stigsby ... same method Dr Stigsby treat PCOS - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. (There is another LCHF diet, this time titled KISS).

The photograph above is the wife of the Swedish doctor Andreas Eenfeldt, author "Matrevolutionen" (Food Revolution), in the ninth month of pregnancy. Although Andreas Swedish LCHF guru  his wife Kristin really did not seriously understood (typical) and the pregnancy went to a "balanced" diet, which is based on carbohydrates. Like many pregnant women, and she was tormented by the accumulation of water in the body and severe swelling, especially in the lower legs. The turning point occurred when she met Dr.Michael D.
